Social engineering scareware is a type of social engineering attack that uses fear to trick victims into downloading or purchasing malicious software. Scareware attacks often involve pop-up ads or emails that claim that the victim’s computer is infected with a virus or other malware. The ads or emails may also claim that the victim’s personal information has been compromised. To fix the problem, the victim is often instructed to download or purchase a specific piece of software. However, the software is actually malicious and designed to steal the victim’s personal information or install malware on their computer.
