MGM Resorts has suffered major disruptions after a cyber attack on Sep. 10th.
USA Today reported: “Over a dozen MGM Hotels & Casinos have had to shut down operations after a cyberattack on its computer systems Sunday left the resort chain vulnerable. Computer systems at all MGM properties have been shut down for the immediate future until the issue is resolved.” Media reports indicate systems from slot machines to guest-room door locks were impacted. Not yet clear is whether MGM guest personal and financial information, or funds, were compromised.

Media reports blame the IT shut-down on ransomware from the BlackCat organization. The attackers used LinkedIn to identify a target, get to the help desk and employ social engineering techniques to gain entry to the IT system, Infosecurity Magazine reported.
While the company released a follow-up statement (below) saying it was “operational” and “able to deliver the experiences for which MGM is known,” press reports and social media posts from guests indicated problems remained. In 2019 the company lost information on millions of guests after a cyber attack.
